Rep. Doggett: House Republicans continue to say “No we can’t,” to immigration reform

Washington—Today, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, spoke against an amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which blocks funds needed to implement President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This policy, initially implemented by the President last June, allows young people who came to this country as children without the proper documentation to share in the American Dream as entrepreneurs, businesspeople, teachers and first responders. It was a victory not only for the DREAMers who worked so hard for the policy, but for all of us who stand to benefit from their contributions.

National Children’s Alliance Names Rep. Lloyd Doggett Recipient of the Bud Cramer Award for Outstanding Legislative Service

Washington—Today, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett was named the 2013 Recipient of the Bud Cramer Award from the National Children’s Alliance. The Alliance is a professional membership organization made up of thousands of child advocacy organizations across the country, including ChildSafe in San Antonio and the Center for Children Protection, the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, and the University of Texas’ Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Austin, dedicated to helping local communities respond to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Alliance, such a dedicated group of advocates who deserve much more recognition than they receive for the work they do in our communities and here in Washington,” Rep. Doggett said.

Rep. Doggett was honored for his work as the Ranking Member of the Human Resources Subcommittee, which oversees issues related to child care, child and family services, child support, foster care, and adoption. Earlier this year, President Obama signed into law Rep. Doggett’s Protect Our Kids Act, a bill to establish a national commission to develop recommendations to reduce child abuse and neglect.

“This issue was particularly important to me—Texas has the highest rate of child abuse and neglect fatalities in the nation,” Rep. Doggett said. “We are aware that there are so many, many children across the country who lose their lives or are permanently scarred by abuse from a caretaker. The commission established by the Protect Our Kids Act provides us with the opportunity to establish an accessible blueprint that communities and good organizations like the National Children’s Alliance and its members can use to improve the protection of our most vulnerable children from violence at the hands of abusive parents or caregivers.”

Doggett Challenges GOP Exploitation of IRS Failure

Washington—Today, in response to U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, J. Russell George, appointed by President George W. Bush, disputed Republican claims of “corruption at the IRS” and that our tax system is “rotten at the core.” While deploring one recent IRS failure, Rep. Doggett challenged Republican exploitation of the incident as another unjustified overreach to promote more tax-subsidized secret money in campaigns, to alter tax laws by shifting more burden to working families, and to impede implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He also called upon the Treasury Department to respond promptly to a petition filed with it by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

Fewer Federal Dollars for Local School Districts

Washington—The Department of Education announced today the preliminary Title I allocations for school districts in central and south Texas for the 2013-2014 school year. The number for each district reflects both the five percent cut required by the automatic spending cuts that went into effect on March 1 and changes in enrollment.
